Ciclovia del Reno [Reno Cycle Route]

The Reno River accompanies and guides cyclists along a fascinating route that winds through the rolling rural landscape of the Bologna Plain. The Reno Cycle Route (ER19) runs along the banks of the Reno, an unusual elevated route from which you can enjoy views of the surrounding plain: cultivated fields, floodplains, small villages, and majestic country villas illustrate the long relationship between a land and its river, and how they shape each other.

Explore the Bolognese plain... from above!

Whether you're a cycling enthusiast or simply want to take a day trip to immerse yourself in the tranquil landscape of the Bologna Plain, the Reno Cycle Route is the perfect itinerary for you: it's entirely flat and suitable for all levels of fitness. Since it's almost entirely exposed to the sun, it's best to do it in the cooler months and always pack a good supply of water.

A route from Bologna to the Adriatic sea

he Reno Cycle Route extends for 42 km along the banks of the Reno River, currently connecting eight municipalities:  Castel Maggiore, Calderara di Reno, Sala Bolognese, Argelato, Castello d'Argile, Cento, Pieve di Cento and Galliera. With a width of 2 meters and a stabilized inert material surface, it is best traveled by sports bikes, gravel bikes, or mountain bikes. The project calls for extending the stabilized section for another 68 km to reach the Adriatic Sea, thus connecting the city of Bologna to the sea.

Discover the hidden treasures along the Reno river

Along the Reno River embankment, cyclists can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding plain as they pass historic and cultural sites such as the village of  Malacappa, the Oratory of Savignano, and the birthplace of Guercino in Cento. The cycle path continues along the mighty river to the La Bisana ecological rebalancing area in Galliera, where the Reno River seems to return to its pristine state.

Eastwards, towards the Adriatic sea

Here the cycle path curves east, crossing the plain that was once home to rice paddies, offering cyclists a spectacle of unique colors and landscapes. With the option of extending all the way to the Adriatic Sea, crossing the provinces of Ferrara and Ravenna, the Reno Cycle Path offers an unparalleled cycling experience.
