Where: piazza Garibaldi and historical centre - 40017 San Giovanni in Persiceto (BO)
When: June 7-9 and 14-16, 2019
The festival is a peculiar homage to Persiceto's traditional cuisine, funnily set in the court of King Bertoldo, the traditional stock comic character of the historical local Carnival.
The food stand, set in piazza Garibaldi, proposes food and atmosphere of the medieval time, while the guests are entertained by King Bertoldo himself, his wife Marcolfa and his son Bertoldino.
The menu, served every evening from Friday to Sunday and also for lunch on Sunday, includes traditional tortellini and tortelloni, pork shin with pink mashed potatoes, friggione (Bolognese tomato and onion sauce) and many other dishes.
The members of the local Carnival societies, main characters of the 140-years-old historical Carnival of Persiceto, are involved in cooking and putting on medieval shows and activities, such as juggling, historical reenactments, games for children.
Created by the pen of Giulio Cesare Croce, writer and playwright born in San Giovanni in Persiceto in 1550, the characters of the Carnival of Persiceto are all linked to the figure of Bertoldo, the coarse but quick-witted peasant central to the work “Le sottilissime astuzie di Bertoldo” (The subtle tricks of Bertoldo). The tale telling of his adventures as he uses his ingenuity to reach the court of King Alboino, where he dies because he cannot eat “beans with onions and turnips cooked in ashes”.
