Inside the Europe's oldest work of hydraulic engineering

The Chiusa di Casalecchio (Sluice of Casalecchio) opens its gates to the public for a series of special guided tours that will allow the curious to access the Europe's oldest work of hydraulic engineering which is still in function in a steady way.

Indeed, during 2018 the Sluice will be accessible monthly thanks to a calendar of guided tours organized by the Consortium of the Reno and Savena Canals. The tours are on reservation only and can be booked on Bologna Welcome website. The webpage and the tours are in Italian only.

Built by the Bologna City Council in 1208 in order to supply mills and factories of the medieval city in full expansion with water power, the Sluice has been rebuilt many times because of the Reno river floods. It was in 1567 that Pope Pious V ordered it to be reconstructed, imposing the maintenance on those who benefited from the water. Thus was created the great sluice based on a design by the Vignola (Jacopo Barozzi), which is still today a marvellous testament to the period's hydraulic engineering.

23rd of March, the guided tour will take one hour and a half.
