Easter Monday's walk along the Bregoli's path

Where: Via Porrettana, 235 - 40033 Casalecchio di Reno (BO)

When: April 2, 2018

The Bregoli path
The Bregoli path

A walk along the historical path of Brigoli  (or Bregoli) that leads from Casalecchio to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca.

This walk is a tradition for the people from Bologna, who used to eat outdoors the Easter Monday lunch, and their favourite destination was the Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of San Luca.

The meeting is at 8,30am in the piazza della Repubblica in Casalecchio. The departure is at 9am from the church of San Martino. Along the way a snack point will provide a refreshing stop.

At the return in Casalecchio, expected for 11am, it will be provided the traditional snack with eggs, salame and pignoletto (local sparkling white wine) in piazza della Repubblica.

Classified as a path of the Cai association (Italian alpine club), the Bregoli path is a moderately challenging road of about 1,7 kms that starts from the Church of San Martino and climbs through the woods along the flanks of Monte Castello, alternating moderate slopes overlooking a stretch called "Balzo della Pizzacherra". The walk offers beautiful views over Casalecchio, the hills above the plain and, on clear days, up to the foothills Prealps.

The origin of the name of the route is controversial: for Casalecchio's people the path takes the name of "Bregoli" because of the ancient custom spread until the first half of 20th century among the poorest people, who used to walking it looking for bregoli ("bràgguel" in Bologna's dialect), i.e. bundles of twigs or wood, free source of wood for the fire. For Bologna's people, however, "Brigoli" derives from the name of "bric", used to identify an unaccessible and gravelly place. The name was officially documented in cartography in 1780, in the map of the Pontifical Cadastre.
