In San Giovanni in Persiceto e in San Matteo della Decima besides being a traditional event over a hundred years old, the Carnival is unique of its kind owing to the Spillo (spéll in Bolognese dialect), which means “transformation”. On the first Sunday of Carnival, allegoric carts parade in the town centre, and once they have reached the central square, they perform the “spillo”: carts undergo a spectacular transformation, that is they “open”, revealing their secret allegoric meaning.
Carts are completely built by local carnival associations, which they are hard at work on it during the months before Carnival by maintaining the utmost reserve on the theme as well as the features of the carts.
On the second Sunday of Carnival the winning cart won jury prize, a cloth depicting Bertoldo and his son Bertoldino with a donkey.
The historical Carnival of San Giovanni in Persiceto occurs on the last two Sundays before Lent and its stock comic character is Bertoldo. In the same perido the Carnival of Decima.
