The Archaeological environmental museum has been housed in a historical building of San Giovanni in Persiceto since 2004, exactly where a medieval gate once rose.
The Porta Garibaldi building, which was once used as a district penitentiary, still keeps some of its original features in spite of the renovation work, such as bars, gratings as well as prisoners’graffiti wall keeping the memory of the museum’s former identity alive.
The museum illustrates the history and development of the Persiceto territory between the Roman Era and the 16th century: numerous Roman remains, that are the result of recent archaeological diggings, are on disply together with fragments of etched kitchen and tableware ceramics from the second half of the 16th century.
In addition there are materials coming from the archaeological site of an entire fortified village dating back to the middle centuries of the Medieval period.
This museum is the main venue of an exhibition complex, which can be defined as the "spread museum of the science of the Bolognese plain"; the other three locations are:
Timetable: Sunday 10am-12pm and 5pm-7pm
The museum is available for guided tours by previous booking from Monday to Friday 10am-1pm and 3pm-6pm
